This model was updated from a prototype example of a beam detector by adding a spreadsheet-style display and better user controls. A beam detector for a circle consists of a number of lines that intersect the circle in such a way that any straight line passing through the circle will intersect with the beam detector. The task is to try and minimise the length of the lines that comprise the beam detector. This has links with the concept of Steiner trees. The model allows the user to manipulate certain points in a geometrical construction and drag them around and instantly see the resulting changes in the length of the beam detector and the various angles between lines.
