The primary aim of building the Empirical Modelling Environment (EME) was to develop a more expressive language for variable referencing. This is motivated by the need for simpler methods of specifying complex definitive script in TkEden. The variable referencing techniques also lead to alternative techniques for organising definitions. Though EME only supports simple data types, it addresses potential solutions to problems of script construction and management that are relevant to all definitive notations.
