The numbers model is used in Jaratsri Rungrattanaubol's PhD thesis to illustate how an EM model can be reshaped on-the-fly to serve different external situations as they occur to a modeller. For example, the basic model can be extended to allow children to learn to read and count numbers, to diagnose problems in number and word recognition and to explore the structure of number systems in different cultures.
